Into The Woods With Allina Liu

Amidst the runways and catwalks, Allina Liu takes a different approach during this past New York Fashion. On September 12th at Lavan Midtown, she transformed a white box into a world of her own where models are placed on moss-covered pedestals beneath projections of swaying trees and the sound of heavy winds. Allina Liu’s newest collection focuses on a different perspective. Instead of the imagined woman or a younger version of herself, Liu steps back and showcases this collection as a rebirth.

The collection consisted of nine looks, each inspired through Liu’s growth as a designer and indvidual. Liu stages each of these garments in an immersive forest, captivating the new direction she’s heading in by reevaluating the past. She experiments with color blocking for the first time while continuing to infuse her heritage with Chinese knots appearing throughout the collection to create structure and negative space. It symbolizes tension and connection which ultimately ties the pieces and world her together.

“The mood was meditative but uneasy, reflecting the tension between feeling lost and finding your footing again.” Each garment reworks recognizable materials into new forms, “bows become bungee cords, nylon ripstop replaces expected cottons, and Japanese denim is paired with climbing rope and carabiners.” These pieces echo Liu's struggle through tough times and emergence on the other side.

“Sometimes the only way through is to disappear into something larger than yourself,” she shares. The woods is the exact atmosphere that encapsulates the rocks, exhaustion, dirt, and cold air which inspired this collection.
